Since it has become exam season, I thought it be best to write up a small article on how to deal with the stress and anxiety that students deal with during this time.

No one likes doing exams and cramming prior to the exam in a short period of time is stressful. It causes exhaustion, aggression, and anxiety.

There are numerous things you can do to minimize the effects that exams have on students and how to deal with them effectively.

Methods in Dealing with Stress and Anxiety for Exams

Manage your stress

Have a study plan leading up to your exam, stick it up on a wall or a door where you know you will see it on a daily basis.

Break down your study for the unit in manageable chunks and start working through it at a reasonable pace.

It sounds boring, but it is less stressful than tackling everything at one go.

Plan breaks, It is okay to take days off too.

Take the pressure off

Dealing with the pressure to do well causes the most anxiety for any student.

Being realistic in assessing how you will go in exams than putting pressure to exceed realistic expectations.

Its about being the best you can be.

Expectations cause unbelievable pressure on you and its best to ignore what has been said than to try and beat expectations.

Group Study

Though cliche group studies are an amazing way to study, even if you’re in a group and everyone is studying different subjects.

Being in an environment where everyone is studying relaxes and motivates you to study.

Talking to other students about your subject helps you to realise what you know, and what you need to work on.

Go easy on the coffee

Caffeine, or even any drug you think will help you study is only a short-term fix, that in the end makes you feel worse and you do not perform to your potential.

Remember, what you put in your body, negative substances cause negative outcomes, positive substances produce positive outcomes.

Relax and Sleep

It is important to look after yourself when studying for exams. Make sure you are stopping to eat regular meals, going for a walk and having a proper nights sleep.

Getting into a sleep routine has more benefits on the body to relieve stress and anxiety.

The body needs to relax, and the mind needs a break.

Listen to music

Listening to your favourite music produces endorphins which make you happy and motivated to do that little bit more.

It also creates ambiance and boosts brain power.

Make a playlist, and put it on.

Study away.

Eat happy food

Believe it or not, eating food that makes you happy relaxes the body and is a natural stress fighter. Just like music, eating food which you love, produces endorphins in the body, just make sure to be careful with the amount of food you intake as you do not want to get carried away.

Visualize Success

Though it sounds a bit out there, it helps to imagine success. Think of you writing the exam and knowing all the answers. Visualise yourself passing the exam and imagine yourself successful. It is the law of attraction, if you’re going to believe in it, it will happen and you will do it.

Pack what you need the night before

The night before your exam, pack what you need from your pencil case, remembering to have spare pens, corrector fluid, highlighter.

Have your notes to revise before you go in.

A bottle of water.

Put out what you are going to wear that day as well. Having these things prepared the night before, will reduce the stress the next morning of running around making sure you have everything you need.

Drink Water

This point can not be stated enough. Drink water when you study. Drink water during your exam. Water has an amazing healing power, it detoxes the body naturally, it keeps you refreshed and hydrated. Most of all it helps you keep calm and relaxed.

Lastly, be prepared.

Your exam is only for a short period of time and knowing that your whole life does not depend on the exam, there are other ways that you can reach your goal.

Know that if you do fail, it is not the end of the world, you will just need to redo the exam or the unit, and think of it as you already have done most of the work anyway so it is just a revision test for you.

Have also a backup plan, just because you failed, it does not mean you are a failure, there are other ways you can reach your career goal.
